Trollstigen - The Troll Road

Trollstigen is Norway’s most visited tourist route with around 1 million visitors each year, and is one of 18 National Tourist Routes. The stretch of road offers spectacular experiences in each of the 11 hairpin bends that wind up the side of the mountain.

When?

Open from mid-May

Trollstigen is closed in winter and is normally open from mid-May until the snow arrives in autumn. There is no fee to drive the road. It is recommended to take this trip on a day with clear skies so that the spectacular view comes into its own. If you go early, you also avoid queues, both on the way up and on the stroll to the plateau.

Historically speaking, the stretch is an old mountain pass between Valldal on Indre Sunnmøre and Åndalsnes at the bottom of Romsdalen. Work on the Trollstigen began more than 100 years ago, and the many road workers who had their perilous workplace here performed an impressive feat of engineering. The road was officially opened in 1936 with a solemn ceremony by King Haakon.

27 kilometers from Bud

Trollstigen ligger langs Fylkesvei 63, en halvtimes kjøring fra Åndalsnes. Har turen startet i GeiranTrollstigen is located along Fylkesvei 63, half an hour’s drive from Åndalsnes. If the trip started in Geiranger and you follow the National Tourist Route, the trip takes about 2 hours and there is a ferry on this stretch. From Bud the trip takes about 2.5 hours and on this route you also have to take the ferry, the connection Sølsnes – Åfarnes.

For those on a round trip in North-West Norway, the sections Geiranger-Trollstigen and Bud – Kristiansund via the Atlanterhavsveien are two sections you cannot miss! The experiences are lined up and the trips offer lush nature, steep mountain sides and open sea as far as the eye can see.ger og man følger Nasjonal Turistvei, tar turen ca 2 timer og det er ferge på denne strekningen. For den som er på rundreise på Nord-Vestlandet er strekningene Geiranger- Trollstigen og Bud – Kristiansund via Atlanterhavsveien to strekninger man ikke kan gå glipp av! Opplevelsene står i kø og turene byr på frodig natur, stupbratte fjellsider og åpent hav så langt øyet kan se.

Hiking trail and lookout point

From the bottom at Soggebru in Romsdalen to the Trollstig Plateau, it is 15 km and this tour can be experienced both driving, cycling and walking. Trollstigen is a favorite destination and in the high season around 2,000 vehicles pass the Trollstig Plateau. So for those who choose a bicycle as a means of transportation, it is recommended to avoid the busiest times, such as the month of July, and preferably start early in the morning.

In Åndalsnes you can rent an electric bike, or sign up for a guided electric bike tour. Be careful, there are daily buses, camper vans and motorbikes and the bends are tight. Trollstigen can also be reached on foot via the old road Kløvstien, an exciting and popular hiking trail. The trip is 5 km and takes about 3 hours to go up from the car park in Isterdalen. On the way up to the lookout point, you can really feel the elements of nature, especially through the roar of Stigefossen, whether you’re on foot or by bike.

Cold and hot dishes

At the top of the sharp bends that creep up from the Isterdalen you will find Trollstigen Café in new glory. World-class architecture in close interaction with nature. Their food philosophy is based on short-traveled food and drink from local suppliers and producers, and the kitchen is run according to sustainable principles. There is also the sale of souvenirs, local handicrafts, parking, paths to lookout points and toilets. Due to the damage following a landslide in the winter of 2022, the cafe is temporarily closed, but will reopen as soon as the reconstruction is finished.

Sødahlhuset in the center of Åndalsnes is a charming cafe that serves cold and hot dishes, they use local suppliers and can offer a pleasant back garden where you can eat outside when the weather permits. The café is also an outlet for, among other things, locally produced chocolate, cheese, flour, drops and other goodies. There is also a workshop for creative ladies who make and sell ceramics.
