Kyststien is a nice hiking trail that offers spectacular nature experiences. The seven-kilometre-long path, which is gravel, is suitable for everyone and can be driven with a pram and can be cycled.

It is a round trip that alternates between new and old in the fishing village of Bud, the ocean at Hustadvika and quieter routes at the foot of Gulberget. When?

Just as nice all year round

This is a trip that is just as nice all year round! The varied terrain you move through, from dense and warm forest, to rough rocks by the open sea and between boathouses and houses in the fishing village, means that the trip can be adapted to the weather, and different weather gives great variation in the tour experience and impressions.

The local buaværings often walk the route at the foot of Gulberget when there is a lot of wind and rain, it is warm and nice to walk there even if the forces of nature show themselves. And when you have come through the forest and the ocean is next on the trail, you can turn around and go back the same way.

For those who want to feel the forces of nature, you can go to the area called «Outside the land» by the ocean to see and feel the wind, waves and sea spray. In strong winds, you have to take precautions and stick to the path and not seek out the mountains where the waves hit – there are big forces at work here.

Where?

Fisherman's village Bud

Kyststien goes in a circle around Bud. We recommend parking at Bud Samfunnshus, there is a large car park. From here the path starts at the innermost corner of the grass field, well signposted. The path goes through forest and over heaths at the foot of Gulberget.

Here is also the Bålhytta, open to everyone with picnic benches and a fire pan. The path continues towards the sea, over the main road and out into the mountains. The path winds in the terrain, and here too there are several gaping huts and rest benches. Here you have a view towards Hustadvika and Leia, and eventually towards Bjørnsund and Ona.

The last part of Kyststien goes through the fishing village of Bud, along paved roads, through construction sites and streets. Finally, you end up at Bud Camping, where you can go up the hill for a great view into the fjord or walk through the campsite before ending up at Bud Samfunnshus again. It is also possible to go up to Gulberget from Kyststien.

To do

Several stops and experiences

The 7 km long trail offers several stops and experiences. There are many cultural monuments in Bud, and many of them are located along the route. Some are well signposted, others lie untouched. At the highest point in Bud, Ergan, is the Bud Coastal Museum, which consists of two parts.

The museum is built around a coastal fort the Germans built during the Second World War. There is also a cultural-historical exhibition about life on the coast back in time. Just below Ergan is the harbor break with aviaries for nesting terns and a rock park.

To eat

Raw materials from the sea

The Bud pier is nationally renowned for its culinary arts and is based on ingredients from the sea and delicious meat dishes. The restaurant serves a buffet full of tasty dishes with a magnificent view of the harbor in Bud and the ocean. The buffet consists of, among other things, fish soup, fish balls, mixed balls, old salted pollock, herring, salmon and meat pie. In the summer season, the restaurant is open daily, and throughout the year a traditional ball buffet is served on Thursday and a buffet on Sunday.

In October and November, Havets festbord is organised, with over 40 different dishes from the sea. This is a very popular event among both locals and visitors, so a table must be reserved well in advance.

Bud Spiseri og Catering in Bud center is open all year round, and serves a Sunday buffet as well as traditional kiosk dishes such as hamburgers, fish and chips and pizza. They also have a rich selection of milkshakes, ice cream and soft ice cream, which are best enjoyed on a glorious summer’s day in the outside area of the eatery – a popular stop among visitors to and from the Atlanterhavsveien.
