Island Hopping in Norway

Island Hopping:
Bjørnsund and Ona

The fishing village of Bud, and the surrounding areas on land and by water, can point to a long history of coastal culture. Some of the places bear the mark of that to this day. Especially out on the islands. Time has stood still there, the old buildings are well preserved by their owners, and every summer these islands become a bustling holiday paradise. Rent a boat at Bud Camping or use our guides and go on a journey of discovery to these authentic gems along the coast!

Bjørnsund

A summer paradise in the sea gap

A short boat ride from Bud are the islands belonging to Bjørnsund: Nordre Bjørnsund, Søndre Bjørnsund, Moøya and Hammarøya. At the very southern end of the notorious stretch of sea Hustadvika, the houses rise out of the sea and cling to the rocks. Here are residential buildings, boathouses, wharves, a church, camp school and a lighthouse. In the 1950s, they experienced a great upswing and prosperity when large quantities of herring arrived on the coast. At most, 500-600 people lived here.

The people of Bjørnsund were well known for having great courage and were enterprising, and were early in installing engines in their boats. They also got electric light before the inhabitants of the mainland, and in this way they were pioneers of their time. The islands were vacated in the 60s and the buildings are today well looked after by the evacuees and their descendants.

To do

Summer café and camp school

Bjørnsund comes to life in the summer with vacationing guests, a popular camp school in full operation and boaters on day trips or holidays. There is no doubt that many people love the island, as the buildings and common areas are well maintained and decay is almost invisible. During the busiest holiday weeks, an open summer café is held on the pier where the camp school is located. Hot and cold dishes are served here, all homemade in the kitchen.

A weekend around St. Hans times is also organized a Coastal Culture Weekend with dining, entertainment, lectures and a pub. If you travel out to Bjørnsund with your own boat, you can visit several of the islands. Dock at the guest harbor and explore the island on foot along white limestone paths, through narrow alleys, enjoy beautiful gardens and charming old houses – a memory for life.

Ona

Norway's southernmost living fishing village

16 permanent residents live here, but the island also has many emigrants and holidaymakers who spend a lot of time here all year round. Fiskeværet consists of the islands Ona and Husøya. At Onakalven, which is the island’s highest point, we find the biggest attraction, the lighthouse built in 1865. Up at the lighthouse you get a fantastic view of the islands, the surrounding sea and inland.

Ona is also known for its two ceramic workshops Onakalven Keramikkverksted and Brun&Blå. They have been on the island for decades and are both located near the ferry dock. In addition, you can visit Norway’s smallest but nicest knitting shop and cafe on the quay; «Two round sticks» and «Happy cups».

Varied nature on land and water

Ona Havstuer offers apartments and hotel rooms furnished in a style that suits the buildings, but which satisfies today’s need for comfort. In the summer-open restaurant, they can offer a memorable experience, right in the heart of Ona – on the quay where everything happens. Feriehuset Onakaia offers accommodation and activities, as well as pleasant pub evenings at Bar’On. There is a regular ferry to Ona, or you can rent a boat at Bud Camping or take part in a guided tour. Regardless of the means of transport – We recommend an unforgettable trip to Ona!
